Nestled in the heart of Hue’s historic landscape, the Khuynh Cái Hạ Mã Stele stands as a profound testament to Vietnamese cultural reverence and imperial etiquette. These sacred stone markers represent more than mere historical artifacts – they are living narratives of respect, tradition, and social hierarchy.
Overview of Khuynh Cai Ha Ma Stele
During the illustrious Nguyen Dynasty, these meticulously crafted stone stelae bore the powerful inscription “Khuynh cái hạ mã” – a symbolic command that transcended simple words.
The literal translation – “dismount horse and remove hat” – carried deep cultural significance. Travelers and officials were required to physically demonstrate respect by dismounting their horses and removing their headwear when passing these sacred spaces. In 1821, a particularly notable stele was positioned in front of Phu Van Lau, marking the prestigious location where doctoral candidates’ names were publicly proclaimed.
Though war tragically destroyed the original stones, preservation efforts saw their reconstruction in 2016. A testament to historical resilience, the stele on the right, which collapsed on April 12th, 2022, was swiftly re-erected by May 7th of the same year.
