Nestled along the picturesque Huong River, Thương Bạc Hall stands as a testament to Hue’s royal legacy. This octagonal pavilion, reconstructed during King Khải Định‘s reign in 1921, offers visitors a glimpse into Vietnam’s imperial past while showcasing remarkable architectural features that blend traditional aesthetics with early 20th-century construction techniques.
Overview of Thuong Bac Hall
Originally built in 1870 under King Tự Đức‘s direction, the Thuong Bac area initially served as a diplomatic reception venue and merchant hall. Through the centuries, this historic site transformed multiple times—functioning as Nguyễn Văn Tường’s mansion, housing educational institutions including Hậu Bổ school for civil servants and Uyên Bác school for scholars, and later becoming the Archaeological Institute (Cổ Học Viện).
The current octagonal pavilion sits on a 1.3-meter high square foundation surrounded by elegant railings. Its distinctive design features cement-crafted “Thuong Bac” inscriptions on both front and back facades. Inside, visitors can explore a spacious courtyard adorned with two cement lakes featuring miniature mountain landscapes and four intricately carved rock dragons. The pavilion’s four main pillars are crowned with lotus motifs and adorned with porcelain distiches celebrating Hue’s timeless beauty.
